I have been contemplating what to write as my blog here for my herbal information and recipes. I want to give you information on becoming an herb lover, medicinal plant lover and user of both. The basics of making tinctures, infusions and making your products will be discussed here. I want to make it as easy for you as possible to make all your own home products at home and for little money. No more chemicals for cleaning, laundry, babies, kids, medicine, food and everything else in our lives.
I want to be able to show you picture by picture with comments and recipes on how to do the creations. Please be patient with me as I am new at the blogger. I am new at writing also.
Essential Oils is where I want to start. I went to Wikipedia and got this reference.
An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils or aetherolea, or simply as the "oil of" the plant from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. An oil is "essential" in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent, or essence, of the plant. Essential oils do not form a distinctive category for any medical, pharmacological, or culinary purpose.
Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation. Steam distillation is often used. Other processes include expression or solvent extraction. They are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and other products, for flavoring food and drink, and for adding scents to incense and household cleaning products.
You must use a carrier oil with essential oils to use them on the body. They are too strong by themselves to use alone. Lavender is really the only essential oil to use without a carrier oil. I use tea tree oil alone on my acne. So does my daughter. That you would have to test your skin to see if your skin is OK with it. There are many different types of carrier oils too. Extra virgin olive oil seems to be very popular. I use grape seed oil, almond oil and jojoba oil. I use EVOO for some of my infusions of herbs. If I am going to make a face cream, I would make my herbal infusion with yarrow flowers and coconut oil as it seeps into the skin better than EVOO. I use yarrow flowers and elder flowers for skin creams and body lotions. Apricot kernel oil, chia seed oil, flax seed oil, hemp seed oil, aloe vera oil, avocado oil, sunflower oil, palm oil and rice bran oil. There are many others we will learn about at a later time.
Over the past five years I have been growing and adding new plants to my back yard so I have my own plants to use and dry for recipes. This way you know for sure how it was grown. If you can't grow in your house, a great place to buy your herbal supplies is at Mountain Rose Herbs right here in Oregon. They grow many of their own plants, process them and supply the products they sell on their webpage.
Herbs are usually very aromatic plants with a taste of it's own. Mints seem to be the most popular when it comes to making an herbal tea. There are many flavors, such as apple mint, orange mint, pineapple mint, peppermint, spearmint, curly peppermint, mohito mint, and others like lemon balm is a mint. Lamiaceae. It is good for upset tummies. I use it in my recipe for bug control in the organic garden. I use the Willamette mint essential oil I buy at Glorybee Foods in Eugene, OR.
Recipe:
10 drops of mint eo
10 drops of neem oil
25 drops of Dawn dish soap
Mix together in a quart jar and put into a sprayer bottle.
Spray plants that have aphids or mold. It works on Monarda (bee balm) You spray this January after the plants have been cut back awhile, to get rid of the mold this Summer. It does work.
Oregon is bad for mold on plants. Try to keep areas dry and sunny if you want to keep the mold away. If you use too much mulch, you can grow mold you don't want. Just some hints for Oregon herb growers.
Lavender comes to mind next as an herb of many uses. There are many types of lavender and many uses. It is a great aromatherapy.
Lavender is great for so many things in life. Just wrap a piece of ribbon around a handful and hang in the kitchen or bathroom. Putting a sachet of lavender in your drawers makes all smell wonderful. Putting a sachet under your pillow makes for sleepy dreams. And the suggestions go on. What do you do with lavender?
After adding the ingredients to the quart jar, fill with water and put lid on and shake. Use immediately in a sprayer bottle.
