Ingredients Worthy of YOUR Time

New posters @ Mountain Rose Herbs
If you are going to spend your time making home made products, then you should have the best ingredients to use in them.  I have bought supplies from about 8 different places that have ingredients to make soap, lotions, toners, cleansers, candles, gift bags, colorants, smells, containers and other home products. One thing to know is that one place never has everything you will need at one time. It just never works out that way for me. This is why I have several companies I buy from.
My selection of Mountain Rose Herbs products.

Mountain Rose Herbs seems to be the household name for herbalists. I see that name on almost every blog I read or Facebook article on natural home made products. They have a vast array of essential oils, many butters, organic ingredients for any illness, teas from faraway lands, containers, books on creating homemade products, spices and so much more with a variety of sizes you can buy. From a large amount for a business to the smaller amounts for the home maker who wants to do for her family. Or Even if you have a small home based business, this is the supplier for you. They have their own farms and fields right here in Lane County, Oregon, along with wildcrafting for some ingredients. Very talented and knowledgeable people work there who are concerned about the Earth.  I am very lucky that this company is in my back yard, so to speak. They are in Eugene, OR and I live here also. I usually buy from the ordering site they have online. I go and pick it up the next day at the office of Mountain Rose Herbs. I save the postage. I also get to chat at them and see what finds they have in the lobby. Last time I got a magazine with lots of herbal info in it. Mother Earth News.
Great Magazine for Herbal Living
and Healthy Living.

Glory Bee Foods in Eugene is one of the places I go to get some of my ingredients as they have a completely different list of supplies. They are a food company also. Aunt Patty's is the name of their food line. Great products! Natural supplements in bulk and retail. They sell organic honey and bee products. They sell hives and the equipment to have your own bees. The great folks who work there are very knowledgeable about bees, their habitat and living conditions. Ask them anything about bees! They have many great essential oils, beeswax, aloe, butters, molds, colorants, smells, and many base oils, like sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, apricot kernel oil and the list goes on. Books, mixes, honey and honey products, all in the store. They have vast online wholesale organic food business. They moved to out on Hwy 99 going to Junction City, just after Beltline, one light and they are on the left. I will be working on getting my own hives and bees soon. It is on the wanted list. Just as the chicken coop and chickens are. This Summer! Any questions, let me know.

I wanted to be able to find smaller quantities for some of these different herbs and I knew they were not anywhere I shopped. So I decided to go on a hunt and I finally found them at Sundance Natural Foods by 24th and Hilyard in Eugene, OR. You can buy Mountain Rose bulk herbs and teas at Sundance Natural Foods.  They have the largest supply of organic herbal products I have found so far. This is what you need when buying organic. There is also someone there to help you with any questions you have about tinctures, herbal formulas and vitamins. Whatever the question, this man knows the answer. I am very impressed with their store and their assortment of organic and all natural foods. As you know, it is hard to find food that doesn't have some kind of ingredient that is bad for you. This is why ," if we want to be healthy we need to change how we eat, what we eat and when we eat it."  This is my new motto on eating correctly and losing those unneeded pounds.

I have spent the last five year perfecting what I know about herbs and medicinal plants. Also how they grow, flower and dry.  It has been a lot of work, but well worth it. This year two large trees that hung over my yard were removed and now I will have so much more sun in my back yard. Also the mold and wet moss will go away mostly. It is hard to keep it all under control and from not killing the plants. This year I am planting more flowers for the bees. I have several more bushes that flower. The lilac will flower for the first time this year.  I am happy that I have so many medicinal plants coming back year after year now. I am always thinning, so if you are interested in anything, let me know. It is that time. I am about to cut the Daphne  Any takers? Daphne is a flowering bush that you take cuttings from while it is flowering. It has light green leaves, two tone sometimes. It flowers in February and has the most fragrant flowers.
The Elder Bush flowering.
Elderberries almost ripe.
This weekend I took my elderberry cuttings and potted them in one gallon containers. I probably have around 20-25 plants. They are actually large bushes if you let them go.  I will be having some for others, so let me know if you are interested in any. I will be planting several bushes, and several in large pots to move around for the best light. I think elder is a great medicinal plant and I am centering what I do around it. To do that I must have my own elder berries and elder flowers.

I am accepting any recipes about elderberries and flowers.  I want to find the best recipes for me to use for medicine and body products. I will be putting a few recipes on here to share with you in exchange. Any recipes for pest repellents?  I grew up with elderberries in my life. We made elderberry jelly, wine, syrup and froze them for winter use. My mom made the wine and I was told it was great every time. Her friends liked it. I need to find a large crock and a few other accessories for this year to make my own.

Here is a great soup recipe that I think would warm any cold afternoon.

Vegetable Soup

1 14 oz can organic chicken or veggie broth
1 11.5 oz can vegetable-tomato juice cocktail (store brand is great)
1 small red potato, diced
1 small red yam, diced
2 carrots, sliced
2 stalks celery, diced
1 can of petite diced tomatoes, small can
1/2 cup green beans, snapped fresh
1/4 cup frozen corn
1 small zucchini, diced
1/2 tsp. onion pieces or bits or granules
1 cup organic green tea
can red beans
1/2 cup rice egg noodles or macaroni noodles
1/2 tsp. basil
1/2 tsp. oregano
1/2 tsp marjoram
salt and pepper to taste

Make sure when you are cutting all the veggies to make them the same size as it helps with everything being cooked just right.  Add all the ingredients in a stock pot. Bring to a boil and turn down and let simmer for around 27-32 minutes or when the veggies are tender to a fork.

Tip: Red potatoes stay together when put into soups and stews. they don't fall apart like the white ones do.

*Add some garlic bread made with rye bread, mix butter, garlic and Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top and broil to brown. (keep an eye on it)

Enjoy, have a marvelous lunch with a spot of wine. Or dinner!
